Within the rectangle there is stamped a crown, FAT (Fabbricca d'Arma Terni, the government arsenal at Terni) and a two digit date (41, 42, or 43). These Terni produced M91/41 rifles have a serial number letter prefix that starts with an A or B. For example, my M91/41 is a FAT 43 with a serial number of AT1844. The 6.5mm x52 Mannlicher-Carcano M 91/38 short rifle with the serial number C2766 (Klein’s control number VC-836, catalog number C20-T750) was produced in 1940 in the Terni Arsenal. This particular firearm, serial number C2766, was made at the Royal Arms Factory in Terni and was manufactured in 1940. It’s chambered in 6.5x52mm — a cartridge invented in the late 1800s. This firearm has been oddly designated “Mannlicher Carcano” because of some features similar to Mannlicher’s firearms. The Carcano M1891 gave excellent service throughout the First Word War where Italy participated on the Allied side, fighting mainly against Austria. The barrel shank on this rifle is marked 'FAT 41', denoting its manufacture at Terni Arsenal in 1941. The stock has a nice cartouche, and all of the numbers appear to match on this rifle.
